My Experience with Indian Thieves and Police Response
It was around December 2020.One day, while I was cleaning the second floor of Meera House, Narayan, the owner of the farm on the south side of the ashram, was peeking out from the wall and shouting to come over. When I went over and listened to what he had to say, he said that I thought it belonged to the Ashram because there was a gas canister hidden by their hut in their field.
When I went to the kitchen, one of the several gas cylinders was missing. The gas cylinder in Narayan’s field belonged to the Ashram. Also, the main body of the vacuum cleaner that happened to be placed under the eaves of Krishna House the day before was left outside near the kitchen. (It looked like he had given up on taking it.) And the ashram’s club was leaning beside it. The servant said that the thieves around here appeared in groups and always carried clubs.
For now, I called the Udaipura Police and requested an investigation. A short time later, a young elite police officer, Narayan, showed up to help me review the route of entry. He followed the large guava tree by the kitchen and looked over the fence to the next field.“The thief came from here!” It was clear that the thieves had climbed inside by using guava trees from an earthen mound in the neighboring field. The earthen mound was made by the farmer Narayan, who had piled earth on the wall of the ashram when he built a pond for irrigation. After that, I told them to scrape off the earthen mound that Narayan had made to cut off the thief’s entry route, and he lowered the earthen mound by about 50cm. And cut the branch that became the invasion route.
At this point, I assumed the thieves had just broken in once.
It was getting chilly and we had to close the windows at night. I stopped working on my PC and tried to open the door to go to the kitchen, but it wouldn’t open.It was locked from the outside. I called Rachna when I realized there was a thief. However, Rachna said, “The thief has a club, and they are two people, so I can’t go because I’m afraid.” Still, it was an emergency, so I ordered him to come, but by the time he arrived, the thief seemed to have escaped through the east wall. We searched the ashram for several hours after that, but the thief was nowhere to be found. The next night, I heard the thief trying to open the side door of the dormitory. It was latched from the inside and would not open.
A thief who broke into the ashram almost every day for two months
The burglars continued to break in almost every day for the next two months. As the sun set, the busy days of closing the doors continued.
When I placed a tree branch with thorns called “Bamboura” right under the southwest wall, which was thought to be an entrance, I heard a thief who broke in at around 19:00 on that day and shouted “Ugh!”.
Every time I heard them break in, I called Rachna, but he refused to come help me three times, saying he was scared.
Then one morning, Rachna came to report that battery fluid had been dumped and spread all over the entrance to the meditation place.
The entrance was locked, but it was a chain lock.It was a type that unlocked by combining a 4-digit number. That day, I happened to be careless and moved only one digit, so it was easily removed. Then the battery was stolen. Narayan from the police came and said that he would definitely catch the thief by intercepting mobile communications. For several days after that, there was no evidence of anything being stolen, but in fact, it seems that he came every day to file the iron bars on the east side of the meditation place. And finally, he stole part of the sound equipment from inside the meditation place.
The police came that afternoon.I told them that there was a thief’s palm mark on the glass door on the east side. They advised me to install guard dogs and security cameras.I asked for the thief’s fingerprints at that time, but they said they couldn’t do that.
After that, there was also a burglary break-in.
When I was working on my PC, I heard the sound of the door being locked from the outside. As soon as I looked out the window, I saw the back of the thief. He was a tall, strong man.
The head was covered with a towel or something. (Perhaps there was a dresser by the door, and he looked into it, so he didn’t leave the door immediately.)
In the middle of the night, I called for the police to be dispatched. Then more than 10 police officers came, including an elite police officer who could speak English. Then the elite said. If you set up a security camera and take a picture of the thief, we will catch the thief.
As advised, I ordered a trail camera from Amazon. I was familiar with the operation of the trail camera from my cat rescue activities in Japan, so I was able to install it relatively easily.
About two weeks after it was installed, a thief who was trying to steal a tractor battery had his face captured by the camera when he peered into the room on the first floor of Mirahaus where the camera was installed. I sent the image to the police and posted it on the shutter side of the hut facing the road on the Chiyonou side. From that day on, thieves stopped coming.
As an aside, at that time, there was a series of thefts of the barbed wire fences surrounding the fields from the fields in the village.
The police come from Udaipura, which is dozens of kilometers away, so it will take about 40 minutes even if you are in a hurry. Rumor has it that the police are so bribed by thieves that they never catch them. I called the police several times and they showed up 4 or 5 days later and advised me to set up guard dogs and security cameras and returned.
After thinking deeply about crime prevention, I suggested to the leader that we get a guard dog.
